This is the story of just one of our clients. We are helping her turn her life around.
Sarah is not her real name, we have changed it to protect her identity.
After losing her job very abruptly, and subsequently her home, this single mum-of-two had no choice but to visit Eastbourne Foodbank. The 42-year-old had to move in with her mum in a single room with her daughter while she began to rebuild her life.
Sarah said: “It was awful. I had been to the foodbank once before in the past and I was so scared, but this time round I knew they were there for me to fall back on in a crisis like this. I knew I would receive a warm welcome and everyone would help me back on my feet again. “
Keen to work, Sarah started a teaching training course and started job hunting at the same time.
She said, “Unfortunately I needed to use the foodbank for a while, but I received so much encouragement to continue my training and job hunting from all the kind amazing people at the foodbank. They were just so supportive. Each week, I would go in and see the staff and volunteers and tell them about any developments and progress.
“There have been ups and down along the way, but I have turned a corner. I have passed my course, already had one job interview which went really well and have some more lined up. I feel so confident I will start a new chapter in my life which means I don’t need to use the foodbank.”
Sarah and her daughter received emergency food for four months while they found a way out of financial crisis. Foodbank provides welfare benefits advice and encourages people into work, as a way of ensuring they have the money they need to afford the essentials.
